Warrior-Yoga – Wonderful Training in May 2014 (recap)

September 23, 2014 By Alexandra Roach Leave a Comment

Dear Friends of Holistic-Ways,

Quotes are wonderful, simply because I seem to be able to always find the right one that matches perfectly for what I want to point out just at that moment. Of course, many brilliant minds were/are out in this world, which in addition makes it even easier.

One of those brilliant minds developed the Yoga-Fit for Warriors training series. This is the yoga class for instructors who work with, or want to get involved with, individuals and groups who “got hurt”  including, but not limited to, military active duty personnel and veterans).  So, during a weekend in May of 2014, I was fortunate enough to be part of a wonderful group of people who are leaders (yoga instructors) that are passionate about teaching and healing others. Many times during the training we would say that class practice is not about us but about every single being in the room. It is about their progress, their goals, and their successes.

Relating it to the work of a Health Coach, it is actually very similar. And this is what makes me absolutely LOVE what I do. I cannot tell you how tremendously rewarding it is to put a smile back on someone’s face. By doing so, you empower those individuals to take once again charge for themselves. So: “When you are a leader it is all about growing others.” … how wonderful!

So “Thank you!”

Thank you for letting me be in your lives, for letting me write this newsletter to you, accepting it, and maybe even reading it. This is what I chose to be my purpose in life and I couldn’t do it without you – those people who like to be lead, grown, and healed.

From my heart to Yours,

~ Alexandra

“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.”
― Beverly Sills

Dear Friends of Holistic-Ways,

When I saw the above quote on the shirt of my daughter’s swim coach, it made me think. What and how much effort do we usually put into things that we feel worth pursuing?

In my daughter’s case, it’s swimming for two hours, six days out of the week. She surprised me and qualified for the Junior Olympics; then she surprised me again and scored second place with her 400 and 200 relay team – two silver medals! Swimming, not on the top of my list, but on hers…

What’s on the top of your priorities list? And how much effort do you put into it?

Look at all the kids standing around the pool, waiting anxiously to start their event. Are you in starting position for your 10-day Sugar Cleanse coming up May 1st?  Hahaha… of course, I am joking; but am I wrong to draw connections here? I don’t think so. We can’t do it all – therefore, we prioritize and attach a label of importance to people, events, actions, etc. Whatever your goals may be (working on improving your relationship, detoxifying your body, spending less time at work and reducing stress, accomplishing that next level of proficiency in your career field, etc.), let me remind you of this quote and the statement: INPUT = OUTPUT

In computing the term I/O is used to describe any program, operation or device that transfers data to or from a computer and to or from a peripheral device. And although we don’t call it I/O when talking about human qualities, I am again not afraid of drawing connections of this process to our daily lives.

Yale graduate and psychology professor Carol Dweck talks about the effort to “reach the place worth going” in her book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.” According to her the key is not ability, “it’s whether you look at ability as something inherent that needs to be demonstrated or as something that can be developed.” She also talks about “trained helplessness” and how capable we all are of giving up when facing failure. Interesting, isn’t it? At the least it is food for thought. Returning with this thought pattern to let’s say the 10-day Sugar Cleanse. Are you not even starting detoxifying your body because you are worried you may fail? Or is it the top of your priority list and instead of taking the shortcut of “trained helplessness” you go for it this time and reach the place worth going to?

Whatever it may be, I am here to help – either with a guiding hand that encourages you along the way and holds you accountable to your personal goals, or as a cheerleader for your awesome success!

On this note, have a wonderful week without shortcuts and full of personal victories!

Much love,

~ Alexandra
